Its funny, I started this book 10 or 15 years ago, and thought it dreadful, dull, just couldn't get through 20 pages. Now, I read the entire thing in about three days. Occasionally I thought some of the scenes were cliched -- but then I had to remind myself that this book basically invented the anti-war novel, and this story is the reason for the cliches. The author presents the foot soldier's life in a realistic way, never becomes mawkish. I guess I assume its realistic - Author was in the mili ...more
