This epic narrative poem, with its picturesque and highly imaginative tales, threads the many aspects of native American mythology concerning life, nature and ritual. Weaving together "beautiful traditions into a whole" as Longfellow intended.

This poem reminded me, and not only to me I suppose, of both the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Luisiads. I read it because of a group here on Goodreads and I was completely unaware of its existence and, as happy as I was to have read it, I admit that I fell asleep several times during "the journey". Maybe it's just because of the somewhat outdated English and my ignorance of the underlying Native American myths, it may be so.
