What Members Thought

Upon preparing for the 10th season of Literary Gladiators, which we will begin filming in May, I was thinking about nominating For Whom the Bell Tolls for the material list for the season, as Ernest Hemingway's short stories have received a good responses from viewers. One of the customers at where I work, though, suggested that we go over The Old Man and the Sea, for it has a lot to say about life. Ari also gave this book a vote of confidence, so I went forth with this book. I can definitely se

If you're looking for an "Intro to Hemingway" book to read, this would be the one. Short, but powerful. This book is a great example of the power of description that Hemingway is so brilliant at writing. MOST of the book features Santiago, the Old Man, alone at sea, having caught a marlin so big that he might not be able to 'reel it in'. It is a heartbreaking story, well told, that will leave you thinking once you're finished. I first read this book as a teen, and continue to re-read it each yea

This is a beautiful read.
I first read this book about 17 years ago and only had a vague memory of it. It didn't leave any lasting impression.
This time I read it whilst also reading Moby Dick and I think they are the perfect contrasting companion reads.
It's amazing that such a sense of the world and of life, can be created within the confines of the tiny boat and Santiago's struggle with the Marlin.

If you've never read Hemingway you could do a lot worse than starting here. It's a hilariously male/ego-centric novella, but then, I am the target audience as a result. It's a really good story, but luckily doesn't overstay it's welcome.
