If you're looking for an "Intro to Hemingway" book to read, this would be the one. Short, but powerful. This book is a great example of the power of description that Hemingway is so brilliant at writing. MOST of the book features Santiago, the Old Man, alone at sea, having caught a marlin so big that he might not be able to 'reel it in'. pelajaran hidup yang sangat berharga. Kesabaran, kerja keras, ketekunan, keberuntungan yang dimiliki kakek santiago. Walaupun harus pergi jauh ke tengah laut, diterpa panas matahari tanpa makanan. Beliau tetap berjuang tanpa lelah untuk bisa mendapatkan ikan besar yang diincarnya.

Seperti pembacaan sebelumnya, buku tipis ini memang mengagumkan dan sarat makna. Kalau dulu saya berpikir bahwa Pak Tua ini orang yang sabar, berkeyakinan tinggi, dan pantang menyerah. Kali ini perasaan itu ditambah dengan perasaan mempertanyakan sikap dan perilaku Pak Tua saat perjalanan kembali.

If you've never read Hemingway you could do a lot worse than starting here. It's a hilariously male/ego-centric novella, but then, I am the target audience as a result. It's a really good story, but luckily doesn't overstay it's welcome. ...more
