Hemingway writes about a subject that bores me, and yet the book charms me. I loved it because it was outstanding, and beautiful.
The novella tells the story of Santiago, an elderly fisherman who has not caught a fish in nearly three months. He is no longer strong, nor lucky, but remains hopeful and determined. He takes his little boat farther out to sea from the harbor and catches a giant fish which he is not strong enough to pull in and so the fish takes control. What follows is four days at se ...more

This short story was really poignant. A poor fisherman, Santiago, struggles to catch enough fish though he is really experienced. He has a young boy, Manolin who is his friend, fishing companion, and support. The boy brings food to Santiago and wishes to learn from him.
But one day, Santiago sets out without the boy and miraculously hooks a giant marlin. The marlin drags him out to see for a couple days until he finally weakens enough that the fisherman can kill him. It's triumphant for the old m ...more

I have always loved Hemingway's evoking narration. His writing gets you to feel the Spanish sun on your skin.
