Usually when I review a book I try to allot the stars not by the audiobook's narration but by the author's words and content. With this book I am awarding four stars but it is partially due to Kate Winslet's fantastic narration. She is as you must know a famous actress. I strongly believe I would never have been able to imagine the words with the terror and emotion evoked through her reading. She does a fantastic job. 2.5 stars really. Luckily this book was short. I didn't love the book, although the writing was fine. I found that I couldn't connect with the story or the characters. I decided to read this first before I stepped my toe into his Rougons-Macquart cycle.

Probably the most ghastly novel I've ever read. Dark and horrible, but dated and odd enough that it sometimes (not always) felt ridiculous and absurd.

Pain! Pain! You know there's pain when the paralyzed, mute, on-the-verge of death mother of the murder victim is downright the winner in the novel.

Each setting is dark, grimy, and grim. The characters are all unlikable and soulless. Called by one of Zola's contemporary critics, "putrid". The book is unpleasant, joyless, and bleak.
