Clerics die. Who will fill the vacant posts? A husband dies. Whom should the widow marry? A rector and his family return after twelve years abroad in Italy. What havoc is wrought by their return?

In my view, it is however NOT the plot, that is the draw of this book!

The setting is the fictional cathedral town of Barchester, not far distant from London. The year is 1856. The story, covering a period of three months, circles around the opposition that arises between two factions within the Angl

I just loved this. I thought it was delightful. Trollope has such a wide range of characters, and while its a bit old fashioned as it was written a few years ago, the underlying principles of people are still there. Lies, Jealousy, Love, Lust.... etc. Maybe even more so in a small village?

I do love Trollope's style. He's understated in his humor and satire, so it rather sneaks up on you at times, although other times, its just laugh out loud funny. I think he's a romantic at heart, and I like h

Barchester Towers is a well deserved classic. I enjoyed this tale of deceit and infighting within the church and the town. Barchester Towers is the second book in the series and it follows close on The Warden which opened the series. A few new characters are introduced after the beloved Bishop of Barchester dies, his replacement comes in and the sparks begin flying almost immediately. Mr. Proudie is to be the new Bishop. His wife is used to calling the shots and getting her way and she brings in ...more

The Warden is required reading before starting this novel. That is my opinion. I love Trollope’s sense of humor. It sneaks up on you. I’m looking forward to reading Dr. Thorne.

I really enjoyed this little satire on clerical life. Great characters, that made me laugh out loud, and even misted my eyes with tears.
