While reading this classic, I kept trying to imagine what it would have been like to come upon it in 1886 and not have any idea where the story was going. I can imagine it would have been completely enthralling. Of course, you can hardly have been on this planet since that time and not know who Jekyll and Hyde are and what is at the root of their story.

I think most people (myself included) are familiar with the dramatic story of a doctor (Dr. Henry Jekyll) who, after swallowing a potion of his own making, metamorphoses into the doctor’s evil alter ego, Mr. Edward Hyde. Where Dr. Jekyll was outwardly an accomplished and kind doctor, Mr. Hyde acted out Dr. Jekyll’s dark side without shame or restraint. Shame on me that I've not read it before. My first attempt to tackle another classic was quite successful. It is really dark and spooky and cruel and frightening at times and when I look at it from another perspective it is quite comically. I was confused at times but ended up thoroughly entertained. For this time period I suppose it was magnificant but I am my own judge and therefore I rate it 4 stars.
