Talk about your deep and difficult novels! The story is easy, the reading is easy, the pace is fast, the understanding is complicated and in some ways unfathomable. Camus' theme of absurdity that runs through his works are present in The Stranger with other resounding comments about death, decay and disconnect.

Camus so vividly portrayed his main character, Meursault, that the book felt more like an autobiography than a work of fiction. From the very beginning, the reader is drawn into the mind of Meursault and his reactions to his surroundings. After reading The Stranger, I read that Camus wrote this book in Paris during the Nazi occupation, and his perspective of the French during this time was one of resignation and inevitability. Great wee read. Makes you consider the spectrum of human personalities and the uniqueness of individuals, how different people react/respond in different ways and that there is no one right way to be a human. I really enjoyed the scene with the annoying priest and wanted to shout at him just as much. I would have liked to find out a little more about the victim and his family but that’s just my curiosity!
