I really liked how this novel took an existential position where you saw the protagonist as just a man who did not demonstrate much emotion or hold much faith. At the point where he shoots a man on the beach known as "The Arab," things take a turn and while he was somewhat arrogant about his crime, was judged a heinous man based off of his personality and not his actions. This is something that is often read in high school but you should definitely check it out on your own as well.
