OK, Marquez is not for me. I wanted to like this book. He has a sort of magical command of words and sometimes I was enthralled by the language and cadence, but I was not charmed by the book and I would not call it a love story. There was little or nothing of love in any of these relationships, and I would go so far as to say that Ariza is a psychopathic sexual deviant and a stalker.

Kind of suprised that I finished it. Awful lot of words for not much action. In the opening pages, a man commits suicide at age 70, because he believes life is not worth living after that age. His loving girlfriend assists. Sure seems like the rest of the book (the next 320 pages) are simply a rebuttal to that idea. Or, maybe not. In the end Fermina and Florentino to get together in their old age, and seem very happy. OK. One really has to wonder about Florentino? He was so buried in his selfish ...more
