Everyone here at GoodReads enjoys reading, but we all like different things. I can only speak for myself. I had read One Hundred Years of Solitude more than 10 years ago and I did not like it. The language, the words chosen were a stumbling block for me. I was intrigued when I read the beginning of Love in the Time of Cholera. I was drawn to give this author another try. To be honest, I don't know if I liked this book. I enjoyed the beginning very much, thinking that I would enjoy this book so much more than One Hundred Years of Solitude (which I have tried reading several times, but not getting further than 120 pages), but I quickly became bored. ...more

I tried...I honestly tried...
But nooo..not for me...
Our book group read it and I really really really really tried...but then there comes a time you have to say..life is short....and..
well if you really hate a book....even half way thru....and well
time to move on.
So many great books so little time!

I don't want to review this book. Five stars. An astonishing piece of work. Can't recommend it to anyone in particular. I don't much want to talk about it.

I do want to remember it, though: there's no hero's journey in a book like this, and what happens may or may not matter. The presentation of what the narrative eye sees and appreciates is the art itself.

As a warning, there's abuse, of various kinds--not what the book is about, but there they are--and since it isn't clear how much the author
