I thought the book was delightful. I enjoyed Emma's character, she was funny, clueless, kind, snobby, good natured... I felt like I could see little bits of me in her here and there.
Mrs. Elton was like the female version of Mr. Collins from Pride & Prejudice. She did get on my nerves, but it was the character, and wholly Austen!

Several years ago, I read Sense and Sensibility and then Pride and Prejudice. Then I tried to read Emma, but I couldn't get into the book. I thought I would not read another book by Jane Austen, based on my inability to get passed the first chapter. Well, I did try again, and I liked it. Although it isn't my favorite Austen (Sense still is). ...more

Emma was a fun book, with all her matchmaking, togethers , who likes who and who should like who and the gossip!! I loved the ending!!

She thinks that she can meddle in the lives of others because she somehow understands their needs more than they do. She thinks she is a mastermind. But, I find her dull, nosy and petty. I had no investment in her schemes and ...more

Well, I won't go into the plot which most people know is about a woman who fancies herself as a matchmaker. I will say I was not fond of Emma Woodhouse but I did like Mr. Knightley. Mr. George Knightley, that is. The story itself was well written but hard for me to get through at times because of the slow pace and wordiness. I did check out the movie (with Gwyneth Paltrow) recently to see how it played out and it was okay. I probably wouldn't recommend it. ...more
