This was much better than I had remembered (having made half-hearted attempts in the past) Not as satisfying or happy an ending as Comte de Monte Christo but very excellent. It's hard to understand how people have such difficulty relating to "classics" like this one when great chunks of it are a bunch of profligate drunkards gambling and scheming on how to get their next dime... ...more

A wonderful story with vivid characters, a compelling plot, and plenty of intrigue and humor. I was surprised how entertaining this book was given it was first published in 1844.
