I read this several times as a kid, but it’s been a long time. My dad first read it to me when I was really little, and my mom recently told me I was almost named Becky Thatcher.
There’s a nostalgia factor for childhood in the mid-1800s, when boys lived on superstition and visions of daring and heroism. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was such a delightful romp through childhood, when life was simpler, children entertained themselves through their own imagination, and communities were closer and looked after one another. Twain was such an incredible storyteller, and his wit shone through.

I really don't think there is anything I can say about Tom Sawyer that hasn't been said but things I learned:
This story is just funny. I never realized there was so much humor. There are the more famous scenes like the whitewashing. I think everyone has heard that one. But I love all the little parts like about how Tom and Becky are engaged and the bit about the cat and the warts.
I loved the spooky scenes so much. The parts in the graveyard and the ghosts were great. This wasn't meant to be a s ...more

Tom's character was an unpleasant surprise. He's kinda jerk. Too self-serving and self-absorbed to be genuinely likable. I'd take Huck over Tom anyday.
