My poor, socially awkward, simp of a man! Is it any wonder that this is my (second) most favourite Austenian pairing of all time?? I love a misunderstood, enemies-lovers, bickering couple and theirs is the original prototype.

Oh my goodness, what an awesome book! What a shame that I spurned this book all of my life because I find romance novels distasteful. Yes, there are romances in this novel, but Jane Austen's novel is so much more than that. Her descriptions of the characters, how they spoke and how they behaved left the reader with a sense that the people inhabiting this book were real. This was a pleasant read that I found far too easy to walk away from. I feel like the story did not truly get going until the last third or so of the novel (essentially after Mr. Darcy’s letter). Up to that point, I felt like there were too few stakes for the reader. Once we realize Mr. Darcy’s true character that all changes.

I see the importance of the book within its context. Austen offers a critique of the contemporary view of marriage - specifically one with undue regard for social standing This was a pleasant read that I found far too easy to walk away from. I feel like the story did not truly get going until the last third or so of the novel (essentially after Mr. Darcy’s letter). Up to that point, I felt like there were too few stakes for the reader. Once we realize Mr. Darcy’s true character that all changes.

I see the importance of the book within its context. Austen offers a critique of the contemporary view of marriage - specifically one with undue regard for social standing and a questionable absence of affection. However, she is not radical in her pursuit of emotionalism. In fact, Lydia’s escape with Wickham serves as a cautionary tale for those who would pursue love in the midst of an emotional high, over and against all reason. However, Charlotte’s tepid marriage to Mr. Collins reveals the danger of the other side. A marriage formed as the byproduct of careful reasoning and calculation does not create a fruitful environment for contentment. Instead, Austen advocates for something in-between. Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy’s marriage offers one of both passion and reason. Lady Catherine makes clear that it skirts the social mores of the time, but a basic justification for the match is still provided.

I will readily admit that, in every sense of the word, this novel is a classic. However, it just missed the five star mark for me in terms of enjoyment. My main struggle was the ease with which everything worked out, particularly due to Mr. Darcy’s involvement. He becomes something of a deus ex machina. While the conflicts in the novel create tension, they only do so for the Bennet family. Once Mr. Darcy is revealed as a hero, he handily deals with any issues. This is a culturally and historically appropriate narrative, but does lose some points in a modern context that privileges complex characterizations. I will mention that Austen gets bonus points for giving us the character of Elizabeth Bennet - an independently-minded woman who is deft in her navigation of the social limitations of the time. ...more

This is probably my favorite Jane Austen because the story of Elizabeth and Darcy is so satisfying. I particularly like that Elizabeth falls in love with him for his character.
