Oh my goodness, what an awesome book! What a shame that I spurned this book all of my life because I find romance novels distasteful. Yes, there are romances in this novel, but Jane Austen's novel is so much more than that. Her descriptions of the characters, how they spoke and how they behaved left the reader with a sense that the people inhabiting this book were real. With the possible exception of Jane, none of Austen's characters were either all good or all bad. They were human. I finished t ...more

This was a pleasant read that I found far too easy to walk away from. I feel like the story did not truly get going until the last third or so of the novel (essentially after Mr. Darcy’s letter). Up to that point, I felt like there were too few stakes for the reader. Once we realize Mr. Darcy’s true character that all changes.

I see the importance of the book within its context. Austen offers a critique of the contemporary view of marriage - specifically one with undue regard for social standing

This is probably my favorite Jane Austen because the story of Elizabeth and Darcy is so satisfying. I particularly like that Elizabeth falls in love with him for his character.
