This book exists on its own. By that I mean it's one of the few books I've read that manages to create not only a living, breathing, world, but it also populates that world with characters, from birth until death, and all of them, each of them rather, could fill a novel on their own. I liked it in the beginning--it was a dark comedy with wacky characters in a wacky town. It only got more twisted and weird, and my enjoyment dropped off as the generations moved on.
