Loved it. I want to know myself as well at Betty Smith knows her characters. She puts so much life into each of them you really feel as though they are real and you know them. The picture she paints of Brooklyn in the early 20th Century is captivating. I felt as if I was walking those streets as a 10 year old girl visiting the coffee and tea shop, butcher and laundry man. I don’t remember how I observed or felt about things as a girl but I like to imagine that it was as Francie Nolan saw them. I ...more

For a few weeks, I felt like I was living next door to Francie Nolan. I could see, hear, smell and feel Brooklyn like I was there.
Like the trees that spring up in spite of the lack of everything necessary for life, Katie, Francie and Neely not only survive but manage to live well. Johnny was not so blessed with that inner strength.

Reading this book reminded me that many people live in poverty, working and struggling to survive every day. I am so thankful for all I have, and need to give hope to
