I picked this up as a teen. (What can I say? I was a weird kid. I probably followed it up with one of the Sweet Valley High books or something by Judy Blume.) I can't say that I understood all of it back then, but I was entranced by the language, characters, and era as well as the story of two decadent, fabulously wealthy members of the French nobility who deal with their boredom by toying with other people's lives.
