Fascinating and heartbreaking. My first Tolstoy. Fascinated with the character of Anna Karenina.

I gave this book five stars despite not liking any of the characters. I pitied Anna Karenina's husband but found him rather cold and no prize. Anna herself epitomizes the line in John "Moon" Martin's 1978 song "Bad Case of Loving You" (the late Robert Palmer's 1979 hit cover of which is probably the best known recorded version) that "a pretty face don't make no pretty heart". I admit I didn't expect to like this, as I hadn't much enjoyed the other Russians I've read, but rather than being grandiose and overbearing morality, the beauty of this piece is the humanity of small moments: the stupidity and wonder of a new marriage, the conflicting emotions and suffering accompanying the convalescence and death of a loved one, the small slights which can be fostered into mad self-harm and suicide.
