What Members Thought

To be fair there is a lot great about this novel. Steinbeck paints a picture with words that I can't really compare to any other writer I've read. That being said, setting and atmosphere aside, this book is incredibly hollow and, at times, surprisingly shallow. Several characters feel unnecessary (Noah, the grandparents) and the pro-socialism vibe along with the almost saccharine moralizing about family life and the 'community'.
