I think The Grapes of Wrath is brilliant!

The Grapes of Wrath has a clear anti-capitalist message which is portrayed through many of the characters and events of the novel. It depicts the hardships faced by American farmers during the second agricultural revolution and how they became itinerant workers in order to chase the "American Dream". This is a strange and awkwardly beautiful book.

I enjoyed the story and was equally disturbed by the environmental awareness subtly demonstrated and the aggressive political statements that the author made in this book. The stories of the Joad family and their fellow migrants were both inspiring and heartbreaking. The determination of the downtrodden juxtaposed with the greed of the banks and farming associations was honest and beautiful.

Yet practically every other chapter left me completely cold ...more
