Perhaps if I had read this book at any other time (not the depressing, chaotic year that 2020 has turned out to be), I would have enjoyed this story more. I appreciated the fact that Thomas Hardy presented the beautifully tragic Tess in the light that he did. Tess, with her indomitable spirit and determined self-reliance, was a genuine hero. But the constant buffeting of Tess's life for 400 pages was almost more than I could bear. About 300 pages in, I was ready for this story to wrap up. In Kur ...more
