Germinal by Émile Zola takes place in a fictional mining town near the Belgium border of northern France. It lies in the vicinity of Marchiennes, a French commune in the Département du Nord. Along comes a young, idealistic youth of twenty one, Etiénne Lantier. He envisions what can be achieved if workers rise up and demand fair pay and better working conditions.
