What Members Thought
Germinal by Émile Zola takes place in a fictional mining town near the Belgium border of northern France. It lies in the vicinity of Marchiennes, a French commune in the Département du Nord. The story is about the haves and the have-nots, the bourgeoise mine owners, their managers and the hardscrabble poor working the mines. Along comes a young, idealistic youth of twenty one, Etiénne Lantier. He envisions what can be achieved if workers rise up and demand fair pay and better working conditions.
