Shelter Mountain is the 2nd book in the Virgin River series by Robyn Carr and my favorite thus far. The hero of this book was very shy and inexperienced. This isn’t normally my type of hero, but it really worked for this book and story.

John “Preacher” Middleton has a nice, solitary life. He helps run a bar, owned by his best friend, in a small mountain town. As a retired military man this life fits him perfectly. Little does he know everything he thought was perfect is about to change. He befriends a beautiful woman and her sweet son one night when they wander into the bar at closing. He knows she is hiding from something and he convinces her to take her stand in Virgin River with him and this town. He’s not afraid of anyone and who better to protect her and her adorable son?

Paige Lassiter has finally escaped her abusive husband. She’s gotten away many times, but this is different. She’s found out about a sort of Underground Railroad for women and children on the run. She just has to reach each check point, change her identity and live on the run for the rest of her life. Stopping in the little mountain town of Virgin River isn’t a checkpoint, but she’s tired and her little boy is getting sick. She just needs a little time to regroup. She had no idea that fateful stop would forever change her life.

It’s so fun to read the story of this couple. Preacher is so fresh and innocent for a big ex-military guy. It’s adorable to watch him fumble in his attempts to further his relationship with Paige. It’s also fun to watch Paige have to take on a different role. In her marriage she was quiet and kept her needs and wants hidden to protect herself from her husband. With Preacher it’s the opposite. She has to be the aggressor and show him what she wants and what will work for them. I loved it!

I really recommend this book. It’s just a nice, slow read. The characters are enjoyable and the townspeople are so entertaining. I can’t wait to read more of this story.
