This book captivated me from the beginning—and that ending!! Irene and Claire grew up together in Chicago and cross paths twelve years later while both of them are passing for white women (although Irene only does it occasionally to get a good restaurant seat). Claire passes for white permanently and is married to an extremely racist white man who has no idea about her true identity.
