Not as brilliant as Shining Girls, but Broken Monsters is still an engaging read. I love how Lauren Beukes always tried to blend many genres into her books. The mystery here is not that compelling, but I like the main characters enough (especially mother-daughter Gabi and Layla) to enjoy the book decently. The ending left you with questions - I'm ok with it though. Only in some parts there are holes here and there, but the pace is still fast for a mystery/thriller/crime book.

I had to put this book down several times before I finished because I found it so disturbing. This is a mystery/psychological thriller set in Detriot. I really like books where the city plays a big role in the book, and the setting of Detroit is perfect for this story. We meet the serial killer early in the book as the chapters alternate between several different characters. There are several despicable people here, and another true evil: voyeurism and social media.
