I read this book a story at a time until this weekend, and then I couldn't stop because I kept laughing out loud ,and reading parts aloud to David and my friend Mary Lynn, and thinking of stories I wanted to read to my fifth graders but I'd have to edit generously because Jenny Lawson is a grown up with a husband and he indicates he wants to have sex, and she says, "No, I can't have sex with you because there aren't enough spoons." They'd get the part about the spoons, because in context it make

This book is about Jenny Lawson, a quirky blogger and journalist, and her personal experiences with mental illness - specifically depression and anxiety. It's a collection of essays, thoughts (random!), conversations between her and Victor (her husband), her friends, her therapist... and her taxidermy raccoon, Rory. While her accounts are funny and comforting it's a book about a serious topic that is not always easy to talk about.

This woman is amazing, flawed and anxious but the fact that she can write about with such wit and clarity gives me hope. The spoon theory had me laughing aloud in agreement. I may not have an autoimmune disease, but the depression that can creep in and take over my brain and hide all my spoons is easier to understand.

I put off reading this book for a while. As humorous as her writing is, there are also some hard truths. And while we all have similar experiences, hear those voices in our head, my experiences are very different from hers.
Yet living through a week with two very high profile individuals lost their battle with depression, this was a great support and helped me understand a little bit better what it is to live with such a challenge.

A beautiful, courageous memoir in the form of blog entries by Jenny Lawson, who struggles with anxiety, depression, autoimmune disease, severe social anxiety, and more. It's a narrative of her life, coupled with the absurdity with the humor, fear, and honesty with which she lives it. It's also really, really funny. I recommend it to anyone and everyone.
