This is a very solid middle grade book - no wonder it received a Newbery. It's funny, heartbreaking, full of action, adventures and mystery. Lots of comical characters but Sachar didn't write them in too much exaggeration.
I love the relationship between Stanley and Zero. And I love how the story is intertwined with each other and makes sense at the end.

This was a great, economical adventure. Sometimes I find YA to set the quality bar too low, but this is a shining example of a story told well for a young audience, without sacrificing artistry. I seriously had doubts about this book, mostly because everyone who saw me reading it said that it was one of their favorite books ever. And these people are librarians. What sort of book can live up to that hype? Well, Holes. I can't say that this is my favorite book every, but I highly enjoyed this book. Stanley and Zero are the perfect anti-heroes and I can imagine that this book would be very appealing to any younger teens (especially boys, especially slightly misfit-y boys).

I loved Louis Sachar books as a kid. I must have read the Wayside School books a hundred times. I had no idea the movie Holes was based on a book and I had no idea that it was written by Sachar. A great book, I read it in a day while staying in a hotel for work. Highly recommended to kid and adult readers alike.

What a great a book! Stanley, an overweight boy who has never fit in, is sent to Camp Greenlake to dig holes to "build character" as punishment for a crime he didn't commit. His character does shine through in this tale of adventure and friendship. It's a children's book, but fun for adults.
