So far really really similar to Oscar Wao, enjoying it.
In the end tho, this book was not my favorite effort of Diaz's. Not as good as Drown or Oscar. It's starting to feel like he is writing the same story over and over. And it's a good story, rich. But I want to read something else from him. Maybe next time he'll go in a different direction. There was a section when he spoke from one of the women's voices, and I liked that voice. I felt that there should have been more of it. ...more

Two stars seems kind of harsh, but "it was okay" is how I feel about this book, so two stars it is. I just don't get the Junot Diaz hype, at least not through this book. Also, I was too lazy to keep looking up all the Spanish slang he used, so I probably missed a lot of content!

Diaz once again demonstrates that he can write well. His character, Yunior, is lively and feels real. Too bad he's such a sucio. The middle story (the title of which escapes me) about the woman working at the hospital laundry, didn't seem like it really belonged. The last story was told in the second person, which I felt didn't work very well. It took a while for me to figure out that the narrator wasn't, in fact, talking to someone else.
