Brooks is obviously a phenomenal writer, but to an extend she crafted the war scenes a little too well. Listening to her vivid descriptions of men in a battle and the smells of the battlefield hospital was a bit much to be enjoyable. This is a wonderful book. I had to read it for my book club and i didn't think I would love it - but i did. The story is about Mr. March - the father from "Little Women." March is serving as a chaplain the Civil War. The author does a beautiful job of describing the horrors of war but she also describes great beauty. There are lovely characters here and a strong story - i really, really loved it.
