A grumpy Old Man and an Okie kid travel across 1938 America transporting two giraffes to California. I felt like I was along for this amazing trip as I read this book, which is based on a true story. Loved it!
This seemed like a fun adventure: a down on his luck Oakie travels cross country with a pair of giraffes during the Depression. Unfortunately, the writing didn't do it for me.
I was not a fan of the setup: a man on his deathbed scribbling away a story in his final hours. I found the ending depressing, but overall I just didn't really care about any of the characters. ...more
