Grief is a bitch, Korea edition. This is a memoir about a Korean American woman and the death of her mother from cancer. Food is love. The author uses her mother's Korean dishes to feel close to her. It has a very conversational style to its prose. ...more

After learning that Zauner's main career is as a musician, I did not expect her writing to be so strong. I was pleasantly surprised by the effectiveness with which she conveyed the love she felt for her mother, her grief at her mother's illness and death, and all the delicious food she cooked and consumed. I loved Zauner's exploration of her early internalized racism and her eventual acceptance and cherishing of her Korean identity. This book was so good. Just beautiful. So much soul. I am so glad I read it.
Addendum: While I was in the shower I had the thought this book was "Seoul-ful" & that my friends, is why everyone should not write book reviews.
