What Members Thought

This book was the selection of a book club at a local bookstore, and I loved it. The bookstore owner picked it because she wanted a lighter read. I'm not sure this qualifies as light reading. There was a lot of sad and hard in this book. But in a good way. It's definitely got a twist of modern in it that might make Jane Austen go bug eyed, but still, I loved it. It's the story of the servants of Longbourn (The bustling Bennet family home. Bennet as in Elizabeth Bennet as in Pride and Prejudice).

If you ever wondered what Pride and Prejudice might have looked like if told from the perspective of the staff at the Bennett household, this is the book for you. The author did a really nice job of keeping the spirit of Jane Austen alive in this book, down to the detail of dividing the book into three volumes. I knocked off a star for a boring and much too long interlude into a flashback/backstory for one of the characters that I felt disrupted the narrative and just really annoyed me, as it wasn't what I signed up for with this book. Aside from that, though, I thought it was pretty great. Lord knows I love Pride & Prejudice, and I idealize Elizabeth Bennet as much as the next gal, but I loved seeing the Bennet family through such a realistic and unbiased lens. I quit reading this halfway through--it just couldn't hold my attention for some reason. It is about the servants at the Bennett household from Pride and Prejudice, but it focuses mainly on one servant, which wasn't very interesting. I may try again...
