I liked this much, much more than the author’s previous book (and I’m likely in the minority on that, but it’s the truth). This starts off in a verrrrrry WTF kind of place, but I will say that I found the work of this book equal to its reveal (not the case with Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell for me). As the story wove on, I found myself much more interested in picking the book back up. Worth the read!

This is very different, and I loved it! It's Weird, but mostly in a very beautiful, poetic way. Everything about it is compelling, and there's definitely dramatic tension, but it also feels dreamy. The narrator is intelligent, resourceful, courageous, loving, and kind, but almost immediately the reader sees that there's a naivete that may be problematic. A mysterious, atmospheric book that captured me completely. At first reading there's much that is inexplicable, but in a beautiful, chill-inducing way. So many levels, both literally and figuratively. It's a hard book to get into - thanks to Jane for recommending that I pay less attention to the external information (dates, building details) and more to the conversations.
