What Members Thought

Amanda
Summer 2019 (Hugo 2019 Catch-Up);

This was rompy and fast, and it almost made me want to give it a higher grade when I first finished it than when I let it sit with me even an hour. This book falls apart so fast both while reading and on any introspective thought about it afterward.

I was very happily drawn into the story of the girl running away from her insular community to be the first one who was offered and (was running to become the first who had) attended an off-world prestigious universit

For such a short tale, this packs a lot of great content in! I love the use of the Himba people literally being connected to their land, and the tension between that and going out into space.

The brevity occasionally caused some drawbacks. For instance, I understood that the Khoush were a race/group who considered themselves superior, but I wasn't clear on where they came from or how that evolved (turns out Okorafor said on Twitter that they're "clearly" Arabic, but that wasn't clear for me!" Wow! I don’t read much sci-fi but this was amazing! I understand all the accolades; what a remarkable, moving story packed into 96 pages. I look forward to visiting Okorafor’s worlds again soon! This counted for 2 of my challenges, could have counted for even more. #ReadHarder #17 sci/fi novella and #ReadingWomen #7 a book featuring Afrofuturism I highly recommend this book, great on audio. And that cover! #bhm

A refreshing perspective. Quite fun. My only complaint? It’s too short. Glad to see there’s more to the series.
