What Members Thought

Summer 2019 (Hugo 2019 Catch-Up);
This was rompy and fast, and it almost made me want to give it a higher grade when I first finished it than when I let it sit with me even an hour. This book falls apart so fast both while reading and on any introspective thought about it afterward.
I was very happily drawn into the story of the girl running away from her insular community to be the first one who was offered and (was running to become the first who had) attended an off-world prestigious universit ...more

For such a short tale, this packs a lot of great content in! I love the use of the Himba people literally being connected to their land, and the tension between that and going out into space.

In the far far future, Binti, a young woman from the desert Himba region of Earth becomes one of the first of her people to leave to attend university. Binti's connection to math is almost spiritual, but it's her determination and courage that make her an instantly sympathetic character. She feels like an outsider at the beginning of her journey to Oomza University, a status that reshapes and redefines when she becomes the only person to survive a brutal attack on the shuttle by an alien like li

Wow! I don’t read much sci-fi but this was amazing! I understand all the accolades; what a remarkable, moving story packed into 96 pages. I look forward to visiting Okorafor’s worlds again soon! This counted for 2 of my challenges, could have counted for even more. #ReadHarder #17 sci/fi novella and #ReadingWomen #7 a book featuring Afrofuturism I highly recommend this book, great on audio. And that cover! #bhm
