Honestly, I avoided this book when it first came out. Something made me cave and place it on hold, though it still felt like something too "Hallmark-ish" for my taste. Turns out I was wrong and I really enjoyed this tragic (yet hopeful!) coming of age tale of a lone survivor of an airplane crash. In tears at the end of this sweet story. I listened to the nicely done #audiobook which is probably part of the reason I enjoyed it so much. ...more

I was completely hooked after the first two chapters. The pacing and arc of this book is extraordinary. Several of the books I've read recently have moved back and forth in time...The Great Believers by Makkai and Unsheltered by Kingsolver. I loved both of them, but this book is shattering me. So glad to be reading it right now. The characters and the movement between present and past in this particular novel are both examples of what the best literature can do.
