Good story and well told, I think.
I love that there was a happy ending, even though it was so, so, so very painful to get there.
I love that her mother understood at last, and saved her. We need out mothers to understand and save us.

Complex novella that dives into the weight of having to own and live your family/culture's history and how you do that while also trying to live your own experiences. There is also exploration of self discovery, gender identity, generational trauma, and grief. The story is part healing, part horror, part innocence and part rage. I will be thinking about this for a long time to come.

This is a mysterious and beautiful novella. As in the afterword, I feel like the beauty resides in its genesis - coming from oral (lyrical/musical) history and then transformed and deepened by the author based on their understand of this story.
