I listened to the audiobook, and I'm so glad I did. Aside from just loving Trevor Noah's voice, I especially loved when he spoke different languages--I definitely wouldn't have appreciated them as much on the written page. And, strangely, hearing his intonation was helpful in navigating the mix of comedy and tragedy throughout.

What a great memoir this is-- not a genre I visit too often, but this book was a treat.

So, I am not a huge memoir reader, and I don't really care about celebrities, so I realize my next statement will be tempered by these limitations, but this is, by far and away, the best celebrity memoir I've ever read, and probably one of the best memoirs I've ever read, period. BOOK RIOT READ HARDER CHALLENGE 2018 - fulfills #12: A celebrity memoir

It was also interesting to me that I read this one right after I finished Katherine Boo's Behind the Beautiful Forevers, which was about individuals living in poverty in the slums of Mumbai, India. There is a lot to compare and contrast between these two books. Both tell of a segment of society living in

These stories are moving, eye-opening, and often times hilarious. Hearing them in Noah's narration is even better! I will be thinking about them for a long time. ...more

Apartheid. Adolescence. Family. South Africa. Humorous.

Wow wow wow what an amazing story. Or really stories. Trevor Noah talks about his upbringing in post apartheid South Africa. There’s just so much here — his headstrong mother in a dangerous situation, trying to make a living by selling burned cds, a kid named Hitler. I really enjoyed these stories ad his very insightful commentary. Smart guy that one.
