According to my children, shopping at IKEA is its own horror story. Agreed, it can be a bit of a nightmare, and the inability to exit until you’ve walked the whole damn store is stress-inducing. Horrorstor is creatively packaged like an IKEA catalog and signature Grady Hendrix style. ORSK is a knockoff IKEA store that was built on the site of an old penitentiary. When a handful of employees spend the night in the store, the ghosts of the past resurface and all hell breaks loose!

This was more 'mainstream' horror than I usually read. I mainly prefer gothic, creepy, haunted house type stories set in the past, like the Victorian era and without much violence and gore, but I really enjoyed this! The modern setting of an IKEA competitor superstore with its directed route to lead customers to shipping nirvana through fake homes and room setups, along with the corporate capitalist attitude toward workers really works.

I do not read scary books at all because my visual imagination while reading sometimes carries over into real life when I least desire it. My husband read this book a few years ago and said it wasn't very scary, so I thought I might be in the clear. Plus, I absolutely love storytelling through alternate texts, like maps and memos and advertisements, which this book does with employee handbooks, furniture ads, staff review pages, coupons, and a few more texts.

The longer I sit with this the more I like about it. I'm convinced this is a social horror book masking as a true horror story. There's lots of gruesome and grotesque imagery through out so if that's not your jam buyer beware. I found a few plot holes that are still making my eye twitch, but the humor, unique approach, and social commentary on consumerism & retail employment all make up for it. This was my first Hendrix book and I'm certainly looking forward to more!

Another fun, creepy Grady Hendrix novel—this time set in an IKEA-like store built over a former prison. The e-book was written really creatively with diagrams of the furniture and then later, diagrams of the prison’s “furniture”. A bit too gruesome for me to love it, but I loved the main character Amy and the way the book ends.

Very creative concept, loved the design. I did enjoy it and thought it was executed pretty well, though I don't think it will stand out very much in my memory later.

I guess it's good it's Spooktober because this book was a lot gorier than I expected from the satirical premise. More body horror than most Stephen King books. I used to read more horror back in high school, and though I read thrillers sometimes I've fallen out of the horror habit. If you have emotional scars from working retail, this book is for you.
