Despite knowing this book would have a tragic ending, I still wanted to read it and learn how Kalanithi remained strong when faced with his own mortality, going from the high of realizing his dream to be a neurosurgeon to the low of accepting that he would likely not live long enough to save all the lives his potential and talent would enable him to over the course of a decades long career. I listened to this book on audio several years ago and was so moved by it, I ended up purchasing the hardback edition. I recently pulled it off my book shelf as it has been mentioned in several podcasts and news articles of late. This book has such an incredible message of not letting your circumstances guide your life, but determining what is important to you in your life, no matter how many days are left.
3.5 stars.
A memoir of a young neurosurgeon who finds out he has stage IV lung cancer at 36 years old. Very quickly, he goes from a doctor to a patient. Though I didn’t especially connect with his writing, he raises lots of necessary questions and his unique perspective gives him unique insights. His wife’s lengthy afterward was extremely moving.

Best book I've read in a long time. Paul wanted to find meaning in life. He was a writer and a neurosurgeon. At age 36, he was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer. He spent his short remaining time living and loving.

This book was beautiful and rough.
The prologue wasn't very gripping but the main pages were gripping and the epilogue was heart wrenching.
I saw a lot of people saying the writing wasn't fantastic but I must say it reads like a friend going through a difficult experience. Which is exactly what it is.

I totally enjoyed this philosophical and touching look at death. The writing is well done and fascinating. I will be thinking about this read for awhile. (Around the Year in 52 Books: a book from a Goodread Choice Awards 2016)
