Bunny Battista was right. She IS the only normal one in this family.
This had all sorts of nonsense:
-Casual racism/xenophobia? ✔
- Sexism? ✔
- Special Snowflake Syndrome?✔
- Shaming teenagers for being teenagers? ✔
- Bad writing in general? ✔✔✔✔
This was a disaster from start to finish and kept getting worse. The only parts of this book I had any sort of interest in was Bunny (seriously the best character of the whole thing) and the romance/drama between the ballerina & sailor dolls the girls were p ...more

I would give this a 3.5 if I could.
Vinegar Girl is one of a series of books by contemporary authors that are based on the plays of Shakespeare. This one is based on "The Taming of the Shrew."
I enjoyed Anne Tyler for years, but I have not loved her recent books - especially A Spool of Blue Thread, which seems to me to be more of an Anne Tyler trope than an Anne Tyler novel.
Vinegar Girl was, thus, a pleasant surprise. I think that having a pre-ordained structure worked well for the author; she had ...more

Pyotr is the "tamer." Both of these characters say, do and think very funny, even outrageous things. I'll read this again when I need to be cheered up. It has all of Tyler's interest in the ordinary screwed up American family w

Once upon a time I read everything that Anne Tyler wrote though lately I've fallen a little behind on some of her latest novels. Which is too bad because what Tyler does so well is create dynamic characters that interact with each other in really tender, insightful, and interesting ways.
Of lesser importance in Tyler's works is the plot, and Vinegar Girl is no exception. This is part of the Hogarth Shakespeare adaptation project and is a retelling of The Taming of the Shrew. I was not familiar w ...more

As a feminist, I've always struggled with Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew. This was a pleasant re-telling.

I think I would've gotten more out of this book if I knew the Taming of the Shrew better. That said, I liked it over all. I liked Kate, and I found the family dynamics strangely relatable. There was weird speech about how men have a difficult time that seemed out of place, but maybe that alludes to the play? Anyway, worth a read.
