I love to read books about this time in our history - pre Civil War and slavery in the South. The story takes place in Charleston. A very wealthy slave-owning family gifts their daughter Sarah her very own slave when she turns 11. Sarah is horrified for she believes slavery is evil. The book is based on a true person - Sarah, but her slave Handful is fictional. The story is interesting i like how the chapters narrative goes back and forth between Sarah and Handful.
