I adored both Poisonwood Bible and Prodigal Summer and was curious about Kingsolver's new book. The Lacuna is a departure for Kingsolver and while I didn't love it in the same passionate way I did her previous work, it was very good. The rating should be closer to 4.5 stars than 4. Harrison Shepard grows up in Mexico, estranged from his American father and survives a flighty mother. He is shy, smart, but also an outsider in many different ways. Not her best work. Bean Trees, Pigs in Heaven, Animal Dreams, and Poisonwood Bible are all better. Prodigal Summer....probably better too. Kingsolver never fully develops the main character, Harrison Shepard, and the style of this novel (told through letters and newspaper articles) is a bit detached.

While I was reading this book, I kept changing my mind about what I thought of it. The story was okay--some parts more interesting than others, but rarely scintillating. I enjoyed all the history (even when it angered me) and found the writing to be often beautiful. But by the end, I loved the story and how it was presented. So far, it feels clumsy, slow, not like Kingsolver's regular style.
2/25 It took me about 11 days to read this book. The protagonist was not an interesting or engaging character, which made getting through this book a long, boring, slog. The end of the book was much better than the middle, but isn't worth reading nearly 500 pages to get to it. ...more

Amazing, heartbreaking book. Starts out slowly but then gets better & better. Kingsolver's writing is amazing. This book will stay with me for a while.
