I gave this book to my high school aged son to read when he asked for some classics that he might add to his reading list. Then I realized I remembered very little about it other than having enjoyed it in high school and that it involved wrestling.

I selected this for the 2018 BookRiot Read Harder Challenge prompt "a book of colonial or postcolonial literature" and the 2018 Modern Mrs. Darcy Reading Challenge prompt "a classic you've been meaning to read." This slim story is a deceptively simple one, but is in reality deep, rich, and complex. The straightforward language helps make 1880s Nigeria accessible to readers whose knowledge of this period of history is limited.
