What Members Thought
Utterly captivating and beautifully written. Much of this books reminds me of L. Frank Baum's whimsical Oz series, both in the world the author creates and the fanciful cast of characters. The writing style is reminiscent of Baum's work as well, in the very best ways. Valente's mastery of the writing craft continues to surprise me. I'm just sorry I waited this long to read such a wonderful story.

This was a rich, lush, slyly self-aware, magical fantasy. It was all the best parts of Alice in Wonderland and Wizard of Oz wrapped up into one, and yet totally its own and very different book. September is a relatively plucky young heroine, who is nonetheless believably flawed and vulnerable. I love her growing friendship with A-L and Saturday, and the wonderful strangness of so many of the supporting characters. There was a lot going on in this book, but in the end I really liked the take on traveling “through the looking glass” and how fairyland might be darker than expected.
