Danticat has been on my list for awhile now, and I thought it would be a good follow up to The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. These two books partially share an island, and similar themes of female struggle against a male dominant society - but the styles are so completely different. I wanted to love this book, and while I am glad I read it - it left me a little flat. The sparse style made me feel like I didn't have a good handle on the characters.
