Um...yeah. This was a pretentious work of "art"--a fantasy about a man with no morals, and no goal in life besides making the perfect fragrance, and willing to kill for it.
It would have been better if the main character had some kind of redeeming qualities...anything would have worked. Alas, he has nothing. But really, neither does anyone else.
