Hope Jahren combines memoir and nature writing as she tells how (and why) she became a scientist. I knew that funding for research was a hurdle, but I didn’t realize just how monumental a problem it is for those who are trying to conduct research. I enjoyed learning about her personal journey, as well as the botanical/ecological ideas she presented.

I had a hard time getting in to this book. I think because I was listening to it and I didn't really gel with the author's voice. I am also not a huge paleobotany enthusiast but I did learn a great deal about kudzu (always thought it was brought from Vietnam, not Japan) and planting trees. It was really interesting to read this book from the perspective of a female contemporary who chose not to continue down the science path past graduate school. The path not taken.
I enjoyed going back and forth between stories from her life and information specific to plants (that seems to parallel her life).
